Gua Sha

A traditional treatment that uses gentle pressure and specialized tools to stimulate the skin, support circulation and release tension.

Release areas of stagnation and tension...

Sometimes the simplest treatments can make you feel the difference.

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that uses a smooth tool to gently stimulate the skin and underlying tissues.

It can be used as part of an acupuncture treatment or as a relaxing facial treatment.

Why Choose Essential Balance for Gua Sha?

At Essential Balance, Gua Sha is part of a larger, personalized approach to care.

We don't use the same technique for everyone. Your treatment is adapted according to your concerns, your health and what we feel will be most beneficial during your session.

Gua Sha may be incorporated with acupuncture, or it may be part of a facial treatment.

The goal is always the same: to help you feel balanced, relaxed and your best.

Your Questions Answered

1What is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha or guasha is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves using a smooth-edged tool to gently glide across the skin.

The technique has been used for centuries and is traditionally believed to stimulate Qi and Blood and help release areas of stagnation and tension.

Today, Gua Sha is also widely used as a therapeutic and facial massage technique because of its stimulating and relaxing effects.

At Essential Balance, the technique is adapted depending on whether we're working with the body, face or incorporating Gua Sha into an acupuncture treatment.
2How does Gua Sha work?
A smooth Gua Sha tool is gently pressed and moved across the skin using controlled strokes.

On the body, the technique can create increased circulation to the treated area and may help loosen tight muscles and tissues.

On the face, lighter pressure is used. The goal is to stimulate the skin, support circulation and lymphatic movement, and relax facial muscles.

The technique is always adjusted to the area being treated and your individual comfort level.
3Why combine Gua Sha with acupuncture?
Gua Sha and acupuncture can complement one another beautifully.

Gua Sha provides hands-on stimulation to the skin and tissues, while acupuncture works through specific acupuncture points.

When used together, the two techniques can provide a more comprehensive treatment.

At Essential Balance, Gua Sha is not necessarily a separate treatment from acupuncture. It can be incorporated into your session when we feel it will benefit you.
4Is Gua Sha painful?
Gua Sha should not be painful. You may feel pressure or a firm scraping sensation during body treatment. Facial Gua Sha uses a much lighter touch and is generally very relaxing.
5Is Gua Sha the same as a massage?
Not exactly. Gua Sha uses a specialized smooth-edged tool and specific techniques to stimulate the skin and underlying tissues. It can be incorporated into an acupuncture treatment or used as part of a facial treatment.
6What does your Gua Sha facial treatment include?
Essential Balance's Gua Sha Facial helps to release tension, and is a beautiful ritual of facial care and self-care.

Our Gua Sha Facial in Toronto, Vaughan and the GTA includes:

  • Gentle cleansing and moisturizing of the skin prior to start of the treatment
  • Using special Gua Sha tools to create a gentle yet firm stimulation of the skin
  • Special treatment attention around the eyes, across the forehead & cheeks, along the jaw line, décolleté, and neck-shoulders
  • Gentle exfoliating treatment, skin-strengthening serum and moisturizer
7Can Gua Sha help with facial tension?
Yes. The gentle massage techniques used during facial Gua Sha can help relax areas of facial tension, including around the jaw, forehead and cheeks.
8Is Gua Sha good for the skin?
Facial Gua Sha can stimulate circulation and support lymphatic movement while providing gentle massage to the skin and underlying facial muscles. This can contribute to a fresher, more relaxed-looking complexion.
