HOW WE CAN HELP

Acupuncture for Menopause and Perimenopause Support in Toronto and the GTA

How can Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture help with menopause?

Hormonal Balance:

Acupuncture has been recognized for its ability to regulate hormonal imbalances. By targeting specific points related to reproductive organs and the endocrine (hormonal) system, acupuncture aims to restore harmony, easing symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and irregular periods.

Alleviating Hot Flashes:

Many women experience bothersome hot flashes during perimenopause. Acupuncture may provide relief by influencing the body's thermoregulatory mechanisms, helping to reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes.

Mood Support:

Acupuncture's impact on neurotransmitters and the nervous system can contribute to emotional well-being. It is often sought after for addressing mood swings, anxiety, and stress associated with perimenopause.

Improving Sleep:

Sleep disturbances are common during perimenopause. Acupuncture sessions can promote relaxation and regulate the sleep-wake cycle (aka circadian rhythm), fostering better sleep quality and overall restfulness.

Reducing Inflammation:

An increase in inflammation and adipose (fat) tissue is common for women going through menopause. Adipose tissue, in return, creates more inflammation and can seem like a viscous cycle that causes immense distress.

Acupuncture is proven to reduce inflammation in the body and can help women feel less inflamed as they transition into menopause.

Using acupuncture, it is possible to experience a natural and empowering journey through perimenopause and menopause.

Nutrition for Menopause and perimenopause Support in Toronto and the GTA

If you’re going through menopause, your ovaries are now producing less estrogen and progesterone.

So, what does this mean?

  • Menopause symptoms often occur due to your body adjusting to the drop in hormones. A healthy and strong body is more resilient to change.
  • Healthy adrenal glands are essential. Your adrenal glands still produce estrogen and progesterone in smaller doses and therefore can help you adjust to the drop in hormones by the ovaries. The adrenal glands also produce cortisol, our stress hormone. An imbalance of cortisol is related to  many common menopause symptoms such as brain fog, weight gain. anxiety and sleep issues.
  • Bone health is now more important! Estrogen plays an important role in bone density. Therefore, ensuring proper nutrition for bones is vital during menopause to prevent osteoporosis.

At Essential Balance our comprehensive Nutrition Support for menopausal symptoms includes:

  • A hormone balancing diet
  • Bone health: Spoiler alert - it’s about more than just calcium
  • Herbal remedies to reduce symptoms and balance hormones

Your Questions Answered

1What is menopause?
Menopause is the permanent cessation of a woman’s menstrual periods. It occurs naturally at an average age of 51. With today’s greater life expectancies, women on average can expect to live about one-third of their lives in post-menopause.

Symptoms can last anywhere from 6 months to over two years. Approximately 10-15% of women will not experience any symptoms of menopause. However, another 10-15% will experience symptoms so severe that they are intolerable.
2How many acupuncture treatments will I need?
This requires a very individualized answer since every client presents with a unique history and set of symptoms. How chronic an issue is will greatly influence how much treatment is needed.

Acute problems could be rectified in as little as 5-8 sessions. More chronic conditions will need a longer course of treatment. It is recommended for patients to start with weekly treatments as each treatment will build upon the previous one.

As the client starts to improve, treatments are stretched out to every other week or to possibly once a month.
3Is there scientific evidence for using acupuncture for menopause symptoms?
Acupuncture are very effective at supporting a woman through the transformation into menopause and sedating the associated symptoms. Studies(1) have shown that benefits can be significant after a series of just 3 treatments, and a series of 8 treatments can provide dramatic relief of menopausal symptoms for up to 6 months and beyond.

5What does cortisol balance have to do with menopause symptoms?
It’s not just our ovaries that produce sex hormones. Our adrenal glands produce them as well.

Many symptoms of menopause occur due to hormonal changes. Our ovaries are producing less estrogen and progesterone, and our body is having issues adjusting. Therefore, the hormones produced by our adrenal glands make this adjustment easier.

This means that healthy adrenal glands will lessen the symptoms of menopause. As the main function of our adrenal glands is to help our body cope with stress, managing stress, regulating the nervous system and balancing cortisol is an integral part of our menopause protocol.
