Not only can acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatments help overcome fertility issues, acupuncture for breech baby treatment can be of help at the end of the pregnancy, as well.
Between 29-32 weeks of a typical 40-week pregnancy, up to 15% of all babies will be in a breech position. This means that the baby is presenting with its buttock, knees or feet pointing downwards. At the end of the seventh month of pregnancy, breech presentation is considered normal and is not viewed as significant until the last six weeks of pregnancy.
If your baby is in breech position, read on to see how moxibustion treatment can help.
If you are faced with a breech or Frank breech baby, Essential Balance has the experience to shift your baby into a head-first birthing position.
Understanding Breech Baby PositionAs a pregnancy progresses and the baby continues to grow, available space within the uterus shrinks, resulting in less room for the baby to move. The baby’s head eventually becomes heavier than its bottom and under normal circumstances,at approximately 32 weeks gestation, the baby shifts downward, head first into the pelvic region in preparation for birth. However, about 3-4% of pregnancies remain in the breech position.
Vaginal birth for a breech baby is uncommon and, for safety and health reasons, most doctors recommend a caesarean birth (c-section) for breech babies.
Why Acupuncture for Breech Baby? For would-be moms wanting a vaginal birth, acupuncture treatments may be an effective way of turning the baby quickly and safely to the physiologically preferred head-down position. Acupuncture has been used to turn breech babies in China for centuries.
Acupuncture can also be used to reposition transverse babies, also known as a Frank Breech, in which the baby has its shoulder or back pointing downwards, or is lying sideways across the abdomen.
What is Moxibustion Treatment? As part of the acupuncture protocol, an ancient TCM treatment called moxibustion is used to apply heat to certain acupuncture points. The radiant heat produced by the herbal moxa sticks has the effect of stimulating acupuncture points to alter the flow of energy into the uterus. The increased placental estrogen caused by the heat from the moxa stick encourages the baby to move around.
Optimally, the moxa treatment takes place between the 34 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. The later you leave it, the smaller the chance of success, as there is reduced room to move, as the baby grows.
